A Solemn Song

In the lap of those misty hills
Lies a home that I cherish most,
There old vines grow on the window sills,
Garden paths with old lampposts,
Among palms they stand like ghosts.

I think of leisurely days spent there,
Of sunsets gold, of easy strolls
In environ pure and mountain air,
Along the pathways to grassy knolls
Those happy times when life was whole.

I dream of those tranquil days
When winds blew soft and low,
Evenings serene with mellow lays
When setting suns cast a deep glow
On the trees that grow row after row.

Yet nothing to me holds more value
Than genial smiles, faces so dear
What else tenderer, sweeter we know
Than the family’s love, hearts sincere
When we all together, all were there.

Though many reunions would come and go
No more will be there that departed soul
Gone to slumber that no waking knows
As grave is for all humans a final goal
So why to weep tears on Divine scroll?
